Project:1 - Final Reflection / Process Part:6

From project one, I learned a lot about my process and gained valuable insights into my thesis. As I was installing my project, I thought everything looked as I thought it would. However, in retrospect, it felt that there were some missing elements to the project as a whole. This wasn't what was intended in the project, and I was hoping to go further with the idea going forward with the next phases of the thesis. Furthermore, the two iterations of Project One didn't fit together cohesively, but moving forward, there will be more features that lead to the two components together. The materials did follow the same properties, but they had a different structure; one was a diptych, and the other was a diorama.

The main points for discussion during my critique were to consider the positioning of my installation and how to use a narrative to push my theme forward. When taking into account the positioning of project one, it would change the idea I would want to present and in the order of presentation. As for pushing the narrative and explaining the scenes that would lead up to my theme, it came into question due to the positioning and excessive amount of white paper I used. The comment that specifically challenged me and made me want to improve my craft was the sketchy look of my style. This is due to this style being one of the core values of my creation, so this comment will have me assess how I would like to display my thesis going forward with the impact of the critique for project one. Another comment that stood out was that the theme of a "spaghetti western" is cliche. Something that I can do to stop this cliche is either to display the entire cliche in its glory or to find a way to break from this cliche as a whole. This comment has pushed me to choose which of these outcomes I can choose and will continue to consider as I work on the next phases. As for the successful aspects of my project, it was the use of the subject matter of a spaghetti western, the use of paper being the main material that I explored in these artworks. As for the non-successful aspects, it was the excessive use of white paper and the sketchy aesthetic of the project. The white paper made it difficult to see the detail of the artwork, and the sketchy style made the project look incomplete, which was a non-intended feature. These will be corrected and refined in combination with the other tweaks needed. My intentions didn't align with the two artworks as intended due to the lack of deeper significance of the artworks.

Going forward, project one provided the foundations of what worked and what didn't, providing information about how my process looks so far. As of right now, everything looks disjoined without any clear meaning, but they will have clearer attention to detail with further adjustments and with more projects that connect the thesis. This may involve an improvement to my thesis with the inclusion of other ideas that connect everything to the wider scale of the project together. The process that will carry over to the next work is the use of paper. The reason why I used paper is due to the properties of paper able to change depending on how it is used. Another element that I wish to carry over is the use of the Wild West being able to explain my theme. My next steps will involve the use of different papers to differentiate what I want to portray in the themes in my thesis and to add additional elements that connect to all my themes in these artworks and the series of artworks going forward. This may include that the Western theme is just a movie set that the subjects in my work are portraying and how the cycle of living a script is repeated over and over again until someone breaks the script, therefore changing their destiny.
